Eraser alternative for developers · worked comparison

Choose structured diagram engineering or an Excalidraw-native canvas

Eraser combines technical docs, diagram-as-code, AI, drag editing, API, and a full MCP server. Excaliwow is the narrower choice when the shared artifact must stay a freeform Excalidraw canvas across browser, REST, CLI, and MCP.

Eraser already supports persistent, agent-editable diagrams. The honest decision is whether your team wants Eraser’s structured technical-document system or an Excalidraw-native canvas with bring-your-own-agent tooling.

Product boundary: Eraser is a strong engineering-diagram platform: its diagram-as-code output can be edited as DSL, by AI prompt, or with drag-and-drop, and its full MCP can manage persistent files, diagrams, folders, and presets. Choose Eraser when structured technical docs, presets, integrated AI, and DSL maintenance are central. Choose Excaliwow when direct Excalidraw canvas editing and Founding Free access to its REST, CLI, and MCP workspace are the specific requirement.

Decision guide

Eraser Free or Excaliwow?

Both products can keep agent-created diagrams persistent and editable. Compare the editing model, account limits, and surrounding workflow—not a fabricated automation gap.

Agent accessFree remote OAuth MCP can create, read, search, update, and organize files and diagrams. Choose Eraser if…

Diagram-as-code, integrated technical notes, AI presets, reference material, and a mature remote MCP are the workflow. Eraser supports persistent agent updates and direct canvas editing; those are genuine strengths.

Choose Excaliwow if…

The artifact must remain a normal Excalidraw canvas and you want Founding Free PAT access across REST, CLI, and MCP while using the coding agent you already pay for or run.

Choose the maintenance model

Use Eraser when DSL, Markdown documentation, presets, and integrated AI are the durable source. Use this Excaliwow path only when direct Excalidraw canvas edits are meant to remain authoritative.

Make a correctness edit by hand

Open the persistent editor URL and add the readiness dependency the first draft missed. Then ask the agent to add rollback to that same diagram without moving the reviewed stage.

Human review

Change what the agent misunderstood

  1. Add the missing readiness-to-Service dependency and label it ‘only Ready pods receive traffic’.
  2. Move ConfigMap and Secret into a separate pre-rollout stage so reviewers do not confuse pod inputs with live request traffic.

Same-canvas follow-up

Send the correction back

Update the same diagram in place: add the failed-readiness rollback decision while preserving the human-positioned configuration stage and readiness edge.

Review the critical path, not the pixels

  • The page acknowledges Eraser’s full MCP, persistent files, and all three editing modes.
  • The comparison does not quote a disputed numeric Free AI allowance.
  • Readiness gates Service endpoints while liveness remains a distinct restart signal.
  • The follow-up changes the same persistent diagram without erasing the human review.

Common questions

Does Eraser have an MCP server?
Yes. Eraser’s remote OAuth MCP can manage files, diagrams, folders, presets, and search. It can create, read, and update persistent diagrams, and Eraser says the remote server is available under the same free-tier limits as in-app usage.
Can Eraser diagrams be edited outside code?
Yes. Eraser supports diagram-as-code, AI-prompt edits, and drag-and-drop editing. Its AI-generated output is diagram-as-code that can be edited manually or with another prompt.
Why does this page omit Eraser’s exact Free AI allowance?
Eraser’s current pricing page is internally inconsistent: its plan block and comparison table say one number while its FAQ says another. The comparison therefore states only that an allowance exists and avoids choosing a number for Eraser.
What does Excaliwow offer that is meaningfully different?
Excaliwow is specifically an Excalidraw workspace. Its REST API, CLI, and MCP operate on persistent Excalidraw diagrams, and it adds no separate AI-credit allowance because you bring your existing agent. Choose it for that artifact and access model, not because Eraser lacks automation.
